If your struggling with weight loss, it could be a medical issue. You may have a metabolic or hormonal imbalance that makes your body resist fat burning. It could be a psychological barrier regarding food that has you stuck. There are many reasons and most of them are unrelated to your willingness to work on weight loss.
We often think that we lack willpower when it comes to weight loss. That’s not true. We all have willpower and plenty to get the job done with dropping the extra pounds. Think about it. Have you ever completed school? Worked a job? Been in a serious relationship or had a child to care for? If you have then you have plenty of willpower or you couldn’t have done these things. Willpower for weight loss is important but only about 20%. The rest is related to beating the underlying disorders and knowing WHY we are doing it.
Our Why is the most important reasons that will keep us committed and able to go the distance. Ask yourself Why do I want to lose weight? You’ll typically come up with an answer in your mind that sounds like the following:
1. I want to be healthier
2. I want to feel better
3. I want to look better
4. I don’t like what I look like
These are a start, but they are unemotional and not particularly motivating. To be compelled to work on your health every single day, you must have a compelling reason. These reasons are usually very emotional and we bury them deep in our mind trying to avoid them. Maybe someone you know or care about said something about your weight and you overheard it. That hurt. Maybe your life partner doesn’t seem interested in you anymore and that hurts. Maybe you know you might not live to see your kids grow up. That hurts. It could be you can’t play with your grand kids and that hurts.
I’m not interested in bringing you down. I’m interested in having us all be honest with ourselves and understand the REAL WHY behind our wanting to lose weight. When we know what it is and it chokes us up every time we think about it, our resolve to be more diligent in our weight loss plan will be exponentially higher.
Find your Why – You’ll do much more than Try.
