We Know Too Much

    I meet with patients everyday that come to us to lose body fat, reduce weight, and live a healthier life.  I have spent most of my adult life working to resist excess body fat accumulation.  I've been fat and I've been thin and everywhere in between. I often say that I'm on a diet everyday of my life and I'm not always successful.  It's work and it takes a treatment plan and not just a diet or exercise routine.
 
     Each person who comes to my weight loss clinic "knows" a lot about weight loss, yet it's not done them any good as far as the results.  There in lies the problem.  We think we know what needs to be done to lose weight.  If knowing was what was needed, we'd all be thin for life.  Yes, almost everyone has a good idea of what needs to be done.  Eat less and exercise more.  That unfortunately is not enough and will frustrate any one with "fat genes" every time.
 
     It's important for all of us that struggle with weight to let go of everything we think we know about weight loss. It hasn't gotten us to a permanent thin.  It's time to adopt a new paradigm for this problem.  First, we must understand that this is not a temporary problem caused by our lack of self control.
 
     This is a disease that has developed out of our genetic programming.  It has developed in an environment that is conducive to excess calorie intake.  Our world is Obesigenic.  We are more sedentary, we are more stressed, we are living more conveniently (Door Dash, seriously???), and we think we can solve this with the latest diet craze.
 
     The disease of Overweight and Obesity is a complex genetic, hormonal, biochemical, and psychological process.  We can not just willpower it away.  It requires aggressive medical treatment and lifetime changes in our daily habits.  
 
     Secondly,  Our lifestyle can alter how are genes are expressed.  Eating smaller portions, more vegetables, and getting regular physical activity will suppress some of the fat genes.  This is called Epigenomics.  What we do and how we live can turn off and turn on our genes.  Eating high carbohydrate and high calorie foods turn on genes that signal fat production and increase the production of hormones that make and store body fat.
 
     When body fat, which in itself is an organ, increases, it starts to produce peptides, messenger substances, and hormones that cause increased fat production and toxicity to our body.  This perpetuating disorder will eventually alter the function of our other organs and lead to secondary diseases which our medical community is more than happy to treat. A focus on reducing body fat will reverse these processes and restore health as well as turn down the genetic signals for hunger and weight gain.
 
     Third and lastly,  It is our responsibility to seek out proper treatment and learn the correct processes needed to lose body fat, turn off abnormal hormone production, and quiet our fat genes.  Learn about this disease and how it can be managed and even put into remission.  Stop looking for the simple answer and get with the right answer.  The disease must be treated with nutrition changes, physical activity changes, metabolic evaluation and adjustment, hormonal evaluation and adjustment, and psychological evaluation and adjustment in our thinking.
