Tolerance

 

 
     Having tolerance is a good thing generally speaking.  It's good to tolerate the opinions of others.  It's good to tolerate differences between people.  It's good to be tolerant...in general.  However, Tolerance can be a detriment to our lives.
 
     We tend to tolerate and get complacent with ourselves.  We get used to overeating and under exercising.   We become tolerant of mildly poor health.  We are tolerant of feeling too full, bloated, and uncomfortable.   We become tolerant of taking more and more medication.  We even become tolerant of our too tight clothes.
 
     To lose weight and achieve a healthier and leaner body requires that we become intolerant to our current behavior and our current state.  We must buck the personal system we are living in and make substantial life long changes.  We must make a decision to not allow complacency.
 
     Our mental and physical ability to make changes is the greatest capacity we have.  Our resistance to making changes is one of the most prevalent issues we deal with.  We like to be comfortable.   Reducing our food intake, avoiding high calorie tasty food is not pleasant.
 
     Getting to a mental state where we can tolerate the discomfort of a new diet or a new physical activity regimen is key to our long term success.  Success in any area requires a bit of stretch and discomfort.  It takes leaving our comfort zone to get into the growth zone.
 
     The growth zone is where we become better.  It's where we learn a lot about ourselves.  It can be scary.  It's not easy to live in the growth zone.  It's so much easier to live in the comfort zone.
 
     The challenge for each and every one of us that want to drop the excess body fat and live a healthier, more fit, and more personally satisfying life is to stop tolerating our current behavior and make the uneasy and scary changes necessary to get our body in shape.  As we start this new year, eliminate tolerance of average.  Eliminate tolerance and complacency of not living in the best body you can.
 
     Start the process to become fit, lean, and strong in 2020.  Take one step at a time out of the comfort zone and begin to live in the growth and improvement zone.  This is the year to achieve great things.  Another year will pass sooner than we can imagine.  Will we be sitting here a year from now wishing we had done something about tolerating an unhealthy body, or will we be in our best shape ever?  Our choice.

Many Measures

Many of my patients and people, in general, get fixated on the scales.  I think the scales are important and tracking our body weight is a great measure of getting leaner.
