Self Confidence

 
     Our success correlates with our level of self confidence.  Weight loss success requires that we be or become confident in ourselves and our ability to achieve a desired outcome.  If we go into the process of dropping weight, getting fit, becoming healthier without confidence, our chances of reaching our goal is greatly diminished. 
 
     Even if we feel confident, there are traps that can take our confidence away if we have linked our self confidence to external factors.  Confidence is an inside job.  It comes from within and how we think and feel about ourselves.  Unfortunately, we have or have not developed much of our confidence on what has been said to us, what has happened to us, and any successes or failures we have had in our lives.  Great news!  We can become confident or more confident today no matter what has happened to us in our past.
 
     Here are 3 things that can help you develop self confidence or magnify your current level of confidence.  They are simple, but if not careful, easy to continue to give our self confidence away to them.  See where you fit into each of these areas.
 
     1.  to
          If our confidence is linked to how we look, it will be limited or very low.  Looks change. 
          Styles change.  If we are overweight it may be very difficult to have much self confidence
          if  we operate under this linkage.  Our confidence has nothing to do with how we appear
          in the world.  We cannot associate our self confidence with our appearance, body size, 
          hair style, clothes we wear, car we drive, house we live in, job we have, or any other
          external factor.  If we do, our confidence will ebb and flow with how we feel about any
          of these short term and superficial items.
     
     2.  Stop Associating our confidence with what others think about us
          If our confidence is based on the approval of others, it will be short lived.  When we 
          are children we seek approval from our parents, our teachers, and other kids. 
          Remember how often your were disappointed and let down by them.  Our self-
          confidence reached highs and lows as children depending upon other peoples 
          acceptance and approval of us.  This confidence game peaked in High School.  If we
          have matured properly, we have realized that what others think about us has nothing to
          do with how we feel about ourselves.  Social media is a haven for low confidence 
          people trying to either belittle someone else to make themselves feel better or
          exaggerate their own importance by always posting "look at me, look at me, look at me."
          Never let our self confidence be at the mercy of what others think.  Truth is...others aren't
          thinking about us.  They are thinking about themselves.   I like to say to myself, "What
          you think about me is none of my business.  Try it.
 
      3. Stop Tying our confidence to a result 
          If we are only confident when we succeed, then we will limit our self confidence most of 
          the time.  Our confidence should come from the effort and the journey toward success.
          If we lose 10 pounds this month and our confidence soars, but next month only lose 1
          and we feel defeated and lost, we are depriving ourselves of true internal confidence.
          Our self confidence must be developed by the work, effort, and development along the
          path toward our goal weight.  A bad week or month should not decrease our confidence,
          it should increase our self awareness.  Being aware of Why we didn't achieve and making
          the proper adjustments is what will build true self confidence.  Building self confidence is 
          a long term process.  Being aware of our feelings and avoiding tying them to the result
          will create a dramatic internal fire that will drive you toward the result.
 
     Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, won 6 NBA titles.  After
     winning several, which must have caused elation, he walked off the court, saw his personal
     trainer standing at the locker room entrance and pointed to him saying, "see you in the gym
     tomorrow morning".   The result was achieved but his confidence was made by the daily
     efforts and work that lead him to the victories.  If he'd only been confident after the victory,
     he most likely would never have gotten there.
 
     We must learn to be confident at all times and reflective of our weaknesses and failed
     events.  Failure is not a person, it is an event.  A Failed event should never rob us of our
     true self confidence.  When we don't succeed, we reflect, we become aware, we make new
     plans, and we move forward... WITH CONFIDENCE!!
